Open Water Swim

Tuesday, Sep 11 | Frank Marcinkowski

CUBU Masters held their third open water practice in Pohick Bay on Sunday morning, August 19, 2007. The first wave of 40 swimmers entered the water at 0715, and despite a very low tide at the start, the water temperature and conditions were excellent for quality open water training. A second wave of another 40 swimmers entered the water at 0850, and by 1000, all swimmers were back on shore.

These open water practices, co-sponsored by Tri-Team Z and CUBU Masters, have become very popular, with an average of 85 swimmers participating in the first three sessions this summer. Swimmers begin the swim at a buoy moored just offshore of the Pohick personal watercraft beach and complete as many laps around a precisely measured 750 m course as they prefer, or as time allows. The maximum swim time is approximately 2 hrs and 45 minutes (0715 – 1000).

To enhance safety, swimmers are assigned small groups of bright, numbered caps. Power boats patrol the perimeter of the measured course, to prevent boat traffic from entering the swim area, and kayaks and “escort” swimmers further enhance safety and also provide stroke technique feedback.

For those tri-athletes seeking to maximize their training day, a run is organized beginning at 1015, with distance options ranging from 5-20K. Both the swim and the run are followed by a picnic and BBQ.

The next open water practice at Pohick Bay is scheduled for Sunday, September 30. Water temperatures should again be very moderate, i.e. mid-70s, with wetsuits optional, but not necessary. All levels of swimmers and tri-athletes are encouraged to join in; however, advance registration is required by contacting Ed Zerkle ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or Frank Marcinkowski ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ), who will record your name and e-mail you a detailed information packet. A second requirement is current U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) registration.

Depending on demand, one final open water swim may be scheduled in mid-October. Please refer to this website for additional updates.

Swimmers in a lake

CUBU Masters third open water swim this summer will be held in Pohick Bay on Sunday morning, August 19, 2007. These unique open water training opportunities have become very popular; we had an average of 80 swimmers for each of the first two sessions, and for this next session, we are anticipating reaching our permit allowance of 120 swimmers.

A measured, marked course will allow swimmers to go distances between 500 meters and as far as possible in a three hour swim window (7 – 10 am). Boats, kayaks and even “escort swimmers” will be present throughout the swim to enhance safety and provide stroke and technique feedback. All levels of swimmers and tri-athletes are encouraged to join in. Beginning at approximately 10:15 am, an optional run with distances between 10-20K is also planned. Both the swim and the run will be followed by the usual family picnic/BBQ.

Anyone interested in this training event must register in advance by contacting Ed Zerkle ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or Frank Marcinkowski
( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ), who will record your name and e-mail you a detailed information packet.

After August 19, the next training session is planned for Saturday, September 29. A fifth session will be planned for early October if sufficient interest exists.
